William Baker

U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the Waynesboro College in 1856, moved to Iowa, in 1859 and became principal of the public schools in Council Bluffs. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1860, but never practiced and returned to Bealsville, Pennsylvania, in 1865, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits, (1865-78). Moving to Lincoln County, Kansas, in 1878, he was successful in agricultural pursuits and raising stock. In 1891, he was elected as a Populist to the Fifty-second, Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1897. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his previous business until his death at age 78. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
