| Birth: | Mar. 28, 1836 | | Death: | Jul. 2, 1863 |  Civil War Union Army Officer. Born in County Cavan, Ireland, he came over to the United States at age 1. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in June 1861 (the second class of that year) ranked 1st in his class. After spending the early part of the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, he was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 140th new York Volunteer Infantry in September 1862. On the Second Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, he led his men in the struggle for Little Round Top, and was shot in the next and killed while forming his regiment's line. Today the castle-like monument to the 140th New York stands on the spot on Little Round Top where he defended.
