He obtained an Oscar Academy Award for Best Director for his film "Cabaret" (1972). He also directed "All that jazz", "Sweet Charity" and "Lenny". As actor he is best remembered for his films: "Kiss me Kate" (1953), "My sister Eileen" (1955) (in a wondeful duo with Tommy Rall), and "The little prince" (1974). He was married with actress Gwen Verdon from 1960 to his death in 1987. He collapsed with a heart attack before to go on stage in his play "Sweet Charity" in National Theatre of Washington.
