John Genest, 91, of Norwell, MA and formerly of Cohoes, NY, died on April 22, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. John was born in New York City, NY. He was the son of the late Theresa and Joseph Genest and the beloved husband of Rita Lagasse Genest who passed away in 2004. John served in the United States Army during World War II in the 463 Medical Collecting Company under General Eisenhower. He worked for Lowenthals Mill in Cohoes for 18 years followed by Ford Motor Company where he worked for 20 years before retiring. John was an active member of the Watervliet Elks and a former member of the Catholic War Veterans before he moved to Norwell, MA and became an avid walker. He and his wife of 63 years Rita loved travelling to Florida and Vermont. John enjoyed and cherished all the time he spent with his family and friends and was loved by all who came in contact with him. John leaves a daughter Sandra Genest Place and her husband William Place of Holden, MA; a son John (Jack) Genest and his wife Suzy of Norwell, MA; six grandchildren: Bonnie (Place) Mulry, Rebecca (Place) Miller, John and Ashley Genest, and Sarah and Allison Bookstein; four great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and his special friend Joann Finch. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday April 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home,105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes, NY. A mass of celebration of Johns life will be held on Wednesday April 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Parish, 122 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes, NY. Interment will be in St. Josephs Cemetery, Waterford, NY. The family would like to thank everyone from Jacobs Pond Estates for their love and friendship and the Hospice of South Shore for their compassion and support.
