Born in Scrubgrass (now Clinton) Township, the son of John Layton and Barbara Hoffman McFadden. On August 10, 1858 in Venango Co., PA Phillip Ghost McFadded married Matilda Mae Walter, the daughter of Jacob Walter and Elizabeth Huffman.

Between 1859 and 1878 in Venango Co., PA. Phillip and Matilda had 9 children they named: Jacob Ambrose, Mary Emily (Huffman), Sarah, George McClellan, Joseph Gilmore, Elizabeth (Hamilton), William Lee, Laura Etta (Moore), and Margaret Louvisa McFadden (Armstrong).

Philip Ghost McFadden, aged 85, died at his home near Clintonville, Monday, September 22, at 8:20 p.m. Had been ailing for some time past. Born in Venango County, M. E. church for 65 years. Married to Matilda Walter in 1858... 61 years.

Services at late home Thursday by Rev. R. W. Skinner. Interment in Peter's Chapel Cemetery. Survived by widow, one brother, Carlisle McFadden, of Barkeyville, and children: J. Ambrose McFadden, George M. McFadden, Joseph G. McFadden, at home, Mrs. Mary E. Hoffman and Mrs. James Armstrong, of Nectarine, and Mrs.H. L. Meers, of Franklin, 27 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren.
