Herschel R. Mayberry, 73, McLeansboro, died Oct. 2, 1988 at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville, IN.
He worked 36 years in Hamilton County schools. He retired as superintendent of McLeansboro Grade School and was curriculum coordinator for Hamilton County Unit 10 School District.
He was born Feb. 25, 1915, in Hamilton County. He first married Edna Mae Stewart, who preceded him in death. He later married Lillian Gholson, who survives.
Mr. Mayberry was a member of the Hamilton-Jefferson County Regional Education Board, Hamilton County Sportsman Club, Masonic Polk Lodge 137, and the national honorary Phi Delta Kappa educational fraternity.
He was a past member of the Hamilton Memorial Hospital Board and attended the First Baptist Church in McLeansboro.
In addition to his second wife, survivors include one stepson, John D. Vaught; one daughter, Joanne Pitchford; a stepdaughter; a half brother; a half sister; and four grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his mother, Lora Boyer.
The funeral was at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with burial at Odd Fellows Cemetery in McLeansboro.
