Born on June 26, 1913, Mrs. Cooper died at her home on May 26, 2002 after a lengthy illness. She faced the last part of her life as she had done the rest-with courage, quiet resolve and reliance on her Christian faith to meet all her needs in the face of life's obstacles.
Strongly devoted to her church, she served it faithfully in a variety of positions, including clerk for than 30 years. Marian Cooper supported many local community service organizations. She also served on the Executive Board of the DeSoto Baptist Association and performed the duties recording secretary for 30 years. As a member of the DeSoto General Hospital Auxiliary, she was one of the first to earn an award for 1,000 hours of service.
Mrs. Cooper was an active member of the Friends of the Library and a tireless worker for the Feed and Seed Ministry for many years. When her illness was diagnosed, she would always try to schedule treatments and appointments with doctors so as not to interfere with her volunteer work.

Cooper, Sr.; three sons, Nile Rollins Copeland, John Luther Copeland and Jerry Drew Copeland; two grandsons, John Bailey Copeland and Nile Mark Copeland; one sister Juanita Krogmire; and two brothers, Malcom W. Smith and Stuart Douglas Smith. Also preceding her was a stepdaughter Francis Cooper Luse. Survivors include two sisters, Des Laffitte of Mansfield, LA and Lena McClung of Shreveport, LA; daughter Marcia Calhoun and her husband Riemer Calhoun, Jr., Mansfield, LA; sons, Gene Copeland of Shreveport, LA and Douglas Copeland of Chesapeake, VA. Daughters-in-law who survived Mrs. Cooper include Thea Copeland of Houston, Texas, and Shreveport residents, Marguerite Copeland and JoAnne Copeland.
Mrs. Cooper is survived by one stepdaughter Pat Cooper Chandler and her husband Frank of Atlanta, LA a stepson, John Cooper, Jr. of Salina, KS and step son-in-law, Skip Luse, of Shreveport, LA. She is also survived by all "adopted" son, Don Jones of Mansfield, who claimed her when his own mother died. She was mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to Don and JoAnne, their son, Huel and his wife, Christie, and young Chris with whom she shared many happy hours and special occasions.
Known as "Grandmother" to nineteen grandchildren and "GiGi" to twenty-five great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren who survived her, Mrs. Cooper was enormously proud of them all and was a source of constant support and unconditional love for each one.
The family wishes to thank hospice provider, HMC Odyssey, for its excellent services along with Dr. Leigh Dillard, Dr. James Noble, Dr. Gary Burton, and Dr. William Bundrick for their compassionate care during her illness. They are especially grateful for the tender, loving home care provided by Velma Copeland, Mary Jackson, Atherlene Spencer, Maggie Stevenson, and Felicia Walker during Mrs. Cooper's last two months.
