YAKIMA - Luetta May Higbee of Yakima completed her life journey of 98 years on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Landmark Care Center in Yakima.
Luetta was born to Niels Jacob Hartvigsen, Jr, and Luetta Brown on May 22, 1912 in Downey, Idaho. She attended school in Downey and grew up on a wheat and cattle ranch with her parents and nine siblings.
In 1930 she married Howard Higbee. A few years later during the Great Depression they moved their young and growing family to follow the promise of the Yakima Valley, where they remained for their lifetime.
Much of her life was dedicated to raising their six children, Averl, Howard Neil, Neta, Boyd, Irene and Dennis. She also worked seasonally in various fruit packing warehouses in the Yakima area but also made time to serve as a volunteer in many activities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which she was a lifetime member. Among her many interests were reading, poetry, movies, and travel throughout the US. But most of all she enjoyed her family, especially time spent with her grandchildren, enchanting them with stories of her youth.
Luetta was preceded in death by her husband Howard in 1976, her daughter Averl "Avie" Capistran in 1987 and son Howard Neil on April 18, 2011, and eight of her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by daughters Neta (Jim) Winkenwerder, and Irene (Clarence) Naasz, both of Yakima and sons Boyd (Susan) Higbee and Dennis (Sharon) Higbee, both of Selah. Other survivors include daughter-in-law Sue Higbee of San Tan Valley, AZ, son-in-law Joseph Capistran of Lake Forest, CA, and a sister Lee Layman of Redmond, OR. Also, she is survived by 26 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Additional survivors include numerous nephews, nieces and her many friends.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm at Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. The funeral will be 11 am Saturday, April 30 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 705 So. 38th Avenue, Yakima. Burial will be in West Hills Memorial Park.
