Jonathan was a 2004 graduate of Jefferson High School, in Jefferson County, West Virginia. He was living in Virginia Beach, Virginia, while attending college and working. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
He was the son of John Paul Volkmer of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Elizabeth Blaylock Johnson of Charles Town, West Virginia.
He was survived by his parents; by two half-sisters and one half-brother; by maternal grandparents Kenneth L. and Deanne M. Blaylock; and by paternal grandfather Harold L. Volkmer. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Shirley Braskett Volkmer.
