US Congresswoman. The daughter of US Senator Marcus A. Hanna, she was educated in private schools in Ohio, New York and Connecticut, and then became owner and operator of a Byron, Illinois dairy farm. Married to Congressman and Senator Joseph Medill McCormick, who was from a family prominent in newspaper publishing, she was also active in newspapers as President of Rockford's Consolidated Newspapers, Inc. Long active in the women's suffrage movement, in 1919 she became Chairman of the Republican National Committee's newly-formed Woman's Executive Committee, serving until 1924. In 1924 she was elected Republican National Committeewoman from Illinois, a position she held until 1928. Her husband was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the US Senate in 1924 and committed suicide in 1925. In 1928 she was elected to the US House of Representatives and served one term, 1929 to 1931. In 1930 she was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for US Senator, afterwards returning to her newspaper interests. In 1932 she married Albert Gallatin Simms, Congressman and Republican National Committee member from New Mexico. (bio by: Bill McKern)
