U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Illinois College, in 1846, he relocated and taught school in Mobile, Alabama. He then studied law, graduated from the law department of Harvard University, was admitted to the bar and practiced Law. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain of Company G, 1st Missouri Volunteers and was the military authorities judge of the Civil Commission Court at Memphis, Tennessee (1863-64). After the war, he was president of the commissioners of Shelby County, Tennessee (1867-69). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving until 1875. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was appointed agent to the U.S. land office at Salt Lake City, Utah, serving 1878-79. He then moved to the Territory of Washington, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits and raising stock until his death.
