Gertie was born on Sept. 1, 1915, in Lake City, Calif. to Mildred M. and Harvey O. Darst. Following graduation in 1934 from Surprise Valley High School in Cedarville, Calif., she married Paul R. Golden in Reno, Nev. at the St. Thomas Cathedral. They were blessed with two children: William "Bill" and Donna.
From 1941 to 1945 Gertie operated the Harvey House, a boarding house for five Navy airplane training pilots in Lakeview, Ore. She cooked and waited tables at the restaurant Hotel Golden from 1946 to 1947. Later she became a bookkeeper at Farmers Exchange in Alturas until 1950, which eventually led her to bookkeeping for Henderson Motors in Alturas until 1954. Upon Paul's transfer to Klamath Falls, Gertie became owner and office manager of Klamath Disposal until 1975. Gertie built a 4-plex apartment house in Klamath Falls which she owned and operated from 1976 to 1997.

Leaving a large void in the family, she will be deeply missed by her children, six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
