His Children have Erected this Stone in Gratitude to the Memory of a most Indulgent and Worthy Parent. "The Memory of the Just is Blessed." - Proverbs. Also Margaretta his wife, interred here December 24th. 1751.' Thomas Twining was born in Painswick, Gloucestershire, the son of a fuller, or wool processor, who moved to London when Thomas was aged nine. He was apprenticed to a weaver, but changed careers and worked for a merchant and importer. In 1701, he became a Freeman of the City of London. Five years after that, he bought Tom's Coffee House in the Strand, from one Thomas D'Ath. This was the beginning of Twining's tea and coffee. The business continues to this day, and there is still a Twining's in the Strand, although the head offices are now in Andover in Hampshire. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
