Warren Porter, 83, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 23, 2011, at Friendship Manor, Grinnell, Iowa. Formerly of rural New Sharon, Warren had lived at Friendship Manor for 2 years following a stroke in the autumn of 2008. Joseph Warren Porter was born February 22, 1928, in rural Poweshiek County to Joseph "Joe" C. Porter and Elva May Gleason Porter. He was their only child. He attended rural schools before graduating from New Sharon High School in 1946. He then started farming with his father north of New Sharon on the family farm which was purchased by his great-grandmother in 1876. In 1950, he married the former Shirley M. Suggett at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They were the parents of two children: Joseph Michael "Mike" Porter and Kimberly Kay Porter. During his active years, he farmed with his father and cousin, Marie J. Porter. Later he rented the Mabel Hull farm and worked it with his son. Besides farming, Warren enjoyed service as a member of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, as a member of the First Presbyterian Church (Grinnell), and as a loyal Republican. In his later years, he enjoyed reading and old movies. He was an "anybody but the Yankees" baseball fan with a penchant for the St. Louis Cardinals.
He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Kim Porter, and her partner Linda Baeza Porter, Emerado, North Dakota, and two cousins Wilbur Allen, Mayflower Home, Grinnell, Iowa, and Eunice Eversdyk, Abilene, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley on April 25, 2005, and his son Mike on October 2, 2010.
