Aviation Pioneer. Born in Cassopolis, Michigan, he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant pilot in the Army Air Corps in 1917. In the 1920s he served in a inactive status as a test pilot and executive for Consolidated Aircraft. As an officer of the US Army Air Service, he flew the first around-the-world flight from Seattle, Washington and back April 6 to September 28, 1924. For his services as pilot, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and rated a command pilot. Assigned to the Air Intelligence Section at Air Corps headquarters, he served as operations officer of the 14th Air Force during World War II. After the war, he was air attaché at Athens, Greece and served as chief of the Air Section of the Joint Brazil-US Military Commission at Rio de Janeiro. He retired US Air Force Major General in 1955.
