Philip Goettel
Birth: Sep. 2, 1840, Germany
Death: Jan. 30, 1920

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company B, 149th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Ringgold Gap, Georgia on November 27, 1863. His citation reads "Capture of flag and battery guidon". His Medal was awarded to him on June 28, 1865. He was one of six 149th New York Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Colonel Henry A. Barnum, Sergeant William H.H. Crosier, Private Peter Kappesser, Sergeant John Kiggins, and First Sergeant Norman F. Potter). (bio by: Russ Dodge)
