US Congressman. A native of Minnesota, he relocated to Nome, Alaska in 1898 and engaged in mining, banking and publishing. Elected on the Democratic ticket, he was the Alaska's first delegate to the US House of Representatives, serving from August 14, 1906 to March 3, 1907. Returning to Alaska, he continued mining and prospecting for various minerals. He was the US commissioner at Fortuna Ledge from 1915 to 1918 and served as its registration officer, food commissioner, and chairman of the council of national defense during the world war. In addition to prospecting, he was engaged in the fur and curio trades. He remained active in the curio trade after his move to Washington State in 1955. (bio by: Thom Painter)
