Ira Starr was born in Connecticut. His father was Peter Starr and their family descends from Doctor Comfort Starr, born July 6, 1589 in England and came to America in 1634 and settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Ira moved to New York Where he married Eliza Mead, the daughter of Michael Mead and Martha (Patty)Potter. Ira and Eliza moved first to Indiana and then to Clarksfield, Ohio where the settled on a farm.
Ira had been a post rider (mail) in his early years and suffered injury when his horse fell on him requiring his leg to be amputated. This had to be done twice without the use of anesthetics. He used a peg leg the rest of his life. Ira plied the trade of a tailor along with owning a store and farming.
After Eliza died Ira moved to Kent City, Michigan to live with family.
