James graduated from Carthage College in 1900 and from Northwestern Law School in 1903.

Married Georgia Hubbs on 6/23/1913 in Long Island, NY at the home of her family. She died 4 years later and he didn't remarry.

James was a football and baseball player, track athlete, coach of football, basketball, and baseball, college athletics administrator, lawyer, and county judge for 20 years.
He was head football coach at Carleton College from 1903 - 1905, at Whitman College from 1906 - 1907, and at Carthage College from 1908 - 1915. He was also the head basketball coach at Carthage from 1906 - 1914 and the head baseball coach there from 1910 - 1915.
