He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1937 and became an aviator in 1940. During World War II he flew combat missions over Italy, southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa for which he was earned the Navy Cross and six Distinguished Flying Crosses. He was the commander of Carrier Division 7 and later, the air forces of the Seventh Fleet during the Vietnam War. He was the Chief of United States Naval Forces in Europe from 1971 until his retirement in 1974.
