| Birth: | Mar. 12, 1869 | | Death: | Dec. 16, 1944 | In the opening scene of Anthony Shaffer's film "Sleuth", Andrew Wyke (played by Sir Laurence Olivier) asks Milo Tindle (Michael Caine), "Do you agree that the detective story is the normal recreation of noble minds? I'm quoting from Philip Guedalla, a biographer of the thirties, that golden age when every Cabinet Minister had a thriller by his bedside and all detectives were titled". Philip Guedalla was educated at Rugby and at Balliol College in Oxford, where he was the President of the Union. In 1913, he qualified as a barrister and practised for ten years, retiring to stand for Parliament five times as a Liberal candidate, although he was never elected, and to write a series of travel books and historical biographies, often reflecting his interest in the Empires of both Napoleons. His final book, written at the height of the Second World War, was "Mr. Churchill, A Portrait". In 1919, he married Nellie Maude Reitlinger (March 10th. 1892 - February 21st. 1978), and is buried with her. His side of the grave bears the inscription, "Time Remembered is Grief Forgotten", while her side says, "And blossom by blossom Spring begins". (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
