| Birth: | Jul. 31, 1916 | | Death: | Nov. 8, 1979 |  A well-known British character actor, in many films from 1947 onwards, notably "The Lavender Hill Mob", "Passport to Pimlico", "A Kid for Two Farthings", and "The Birthday Party", in which he played Nat Goldberg. His final film role was in 1977, as the captain in "The Spy Who Loved Me", with Roger Moore as James Bond. In the same year, he played the father in "Oy Vay Maria", an hilarious play on B.B.C television about the love affair between a Jewish boy and an Irish Catholic girl. He is buried with his wife, the actress Joy Shelton (q.v.). They had three children, one of whom is the actor, Jonathan Tafler, and four grandchildren. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
