SURGOINSVILLE - Garnie Fredrick Clifton, age 84, Surgoinsville died Friday, January 2, 2004 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County where he was a graduate of Surgoinsville High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Bright in the Pacific. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 9543, Rogersville. He retired from Tennessee Eastman after 40 years of service. He was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church, Rogersville.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Flora Johnson Clifton; his parents, Hascue and Margaret Bombailey Clifton and a sister, Helen Ruth Dean.
He is survived by three daughters, Linda Alley and husband, Dan, Joan Allen and husband, Elmo, both of Church Hill and Orpha Carr and Jim Fields, Rogersville; grandchildren, Don and Danielle Alley, Craig and Brooke Allen, Angie Hatfield and Chad Carr; seven great-grandchildren; a niece, Brenda Helton Dye and a nephew, W. Brooks Dean.
Funeral service was conducted Sunday, January 4, 2004 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home Chapel, Church Hill with Pastor Bryan Thurman, Brother Bill Wilder and Rev. Alvin Skelton officiating. Military graveside service was conducted by the Hawkins County Color Guard Monday, January 5, 2004 at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were family and friends.
