Chase and Payton were the beloved black Labrador Retrievers of Cheye Calvo, the mayor of Berwyn Heights, Md, and his wife.
Mr Calvo had just returned from a walk with Chase and Payton, when the police SWAT team forced the door down and began shooting. The older Lab, Payton, age 7 was shot dead immediately. When 4 year old Chase saw this, he ran away, seeking a place to hide.
It was then that the SWAT team shot the younger Lab as he was running away. Why was the SWAT team breaking down the door of the town's mayor? Well, they mistakenly thought mayor Chaye Calvo and his family were involved in a drug smuggling scheme. After hours of being interrogated, the police finally realized their huge mistake and let mayor Calvo go without even an apology. Not only did they kill Chase and Payton but they seriously hurt, mayor Calvo's mother in law.
When the SWAT burst in the house, the poor woman was cooking pasta. They came in shooting. In the violence, mayor Calvo's mother in law was knocked to the floor. The ordeal was terrifying for her, she describes bullets barely missing her as they went by her head.
The loss of Payton and Chase for the Calvo family is beyond words. They thought of the two dogs as their children.
Mayor Calvo and his wife started a fund in memory of Chase and Payton. It helps promote the welfare and humane treatment of innocent animals. The site also has a bio about the boys.
