Gustav Tafel
Birth: Oct. 13, 1830
Death: Nov. 12, 1908

Mayor of Cincinnati, Union Civil War Officer, Attorney. A native of Munich, Germany, he emigrated to America after a failed revolution in the German states in 1848. Tafel arrived in Cincinnati to work as a printer at the Cincinnati Gazette and later became editor of the Volksblatt while he studied law. In 1858, he was admitted to the bar in Ohio and commenced to practice as an attorney in Cincinnati. When the Civil War began, he enlisted as a Private with the 9th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the first all German regiment to enter the Union Army. Four days after he was mustered in, he was elected as 1st Sergeant of Company A. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant by June, 1862, when Governor David Tod appointed him to organize and command the 106th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as its Colonel. His rank was reduced to Lieutenant Colonel when the regiment failed to fill enough companies. Tafel was wounded at the Battle of New Creek in Missouri shortly before Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's cavalry captured the regiment at Hartsville, Tennessee on December 7, 1862. The regiment was soon paroled after an exchange of prisoners. They were then assigned to garrison duties and to dispel guerilla bands in Kentucky and Tennessee for the remainder of the war. After the war was over, he returned to Cincinnati and resumed his law profession. He was elected to the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1866 and served until 1868. He made local headlines when he led a spike-helmeted German militia detachment in a parade during the Tyler-Davidson Fountain dedication in 1871. Tafel, a Democratic Party member, was elected as Mayor of Cincinnati in 1897 and served until 1900. He died in Walnut Hills in 1908 when he was 78 years old. His grave marker incorrectly indicates his year of birth as 1832. (bio by: K Guy)
