Retired pharmacist, James M. Staley, 81, died in Billings Deaconess Hospital on Saturday, April 7, 1979.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Vinson officiating. Burial followed in the Harlowton Cemetery with military rites being accorded at graveside. Pallbearers were Cal Ness, Oscar Biegel, Wilbur Erbe, Reubin Johnson, Dave Piper and David Martin. Donna Rosenberg was organist and the Legion Quartette composed of Bill Dysart, Dr. M.G. Maixner, Cal Ness and Don Swantz sang "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

Jim was born on September 12, in Watertown, South Dakota, a son of J. Melroy and Allie Staley. He graduated from Clear Lake (So. Dak.) High School and received his pharmacy degree from South Dakota State University at Brookings in 1919. After working in various drug stores in South Dakota and Montana, Jim established the Staley Drug Co. in Harlowton in 1924 and served this area until his retirement in 1969.

Jim married Ruth Aileen Danielson in 1927. To this union was born two children, James Lyle and Sara Ann. She passed away in 1954. Jim was married to Margaret Close in 1954.

The pharmacy profession was a source of great pride to Jim who was a past director of the Montana Pharmaceutical Association, a member of the Montana State Board of Pharmacy for seven years and served as its president. He was named "Pharmacist of the Year" in 1965. He served in World War I with the Field Artillery and has been a member of the American Legion since 1919, serving as Post Commander of Post No. 15 in Harlowton. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Continental National Bank in Harlowton at the time of his death, and had served on the board for a number of years. Jim was a member of the Cemetery Board, County Weed Board, a Master Mason, and a member of the American Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife Margaret; a son James L. Staley of Eugene, Ore.; a daughter Sally of Lynnwood, Wash.; two step-daughters: Sandra Keller of Bozeman and Nance Close of Helena; a step-son, Dan Close of Moore; four grandsons, two granddaughters and two great-grandsons; a brother Clyde of Watford City, No. Dak., and a cousin, M.M. Staley of Watertown, So. Dak.
