Normie Huss was the tenth and youngest child of Noah B. Huss and Rosanna George.
Normie stayed at home and looked after her father after her mother died. Later she went to live with her sister Geneva. She attended public schools and business college in Angola, Indiana. In 1909 she was invited to live with her brother, Irv, and his wife, Mame in Coalinga. She made her home with them prior to her marriage, working for a short while in the leading dry goods store in Coalinga.
On August 30, 1886, Normie married Benjamin Joseph "Ben" Byles. After her marriage she went to school, taking courses in art, sewing, and handicrafts. She painted pillow covers and pounded copper. Normie drove stage, worked in Ben's garage and then in a general store which Ben owned.
Normie and Ben had no children.
