BAXTER HARRISON ADAMS WAS ONE OF THE USA'S FIRST 100 AVIATORS. SEE EARLYAVIATORS.COM FOR A 2004 WRITE UP ABOUT BAXTER, BY RALPH COOPER FROM THE HENDERSON GLEANER AND JOURNAL. BAXTER CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON ANCESTRY.COM

BAXTER WAS THE SON OF ROBERT GRAYSON ADAMS (22 FEB 1856, HENDERSON KY - BEF 1900, UNKNOWN) AND MARTHA CORA LEE ELAM (20 FEB 1859, HENDERSON KY - 20 NOV 1949, ALAMEDA CA).

BAXTER OBTAINED SOME NATIONAL "ATTENTION" FOR ONLY 5 YEARS. IN 1914 HE BOUGHT HIS CURTISS MODEL D HEADLESS PUSHER BI-WING AIRPLANE AND BEGAN FLYING FAIRS AND AVIATION EXIBITIONS. THERE ARE MANY PHOTOS OF BAXTER AND HIS PLANE FROM DURING THIS TIME. BUT AFTER HE CRASHED IN 1919, HE HAD THE PIECES SHIPPED BACK TO HENDERSON WHERE HE STORED IT IN HIS BARN ON ZION ROAD (THE SITE OF HENDERSON COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, THE ONE BUILT IN 1954).

BAXTER STILL GOT SOME LOCAL ATTENTION UNTIL HIS PLANE BURNED IN THE 1929 RASH TOBACCO FACTORY FIRE, WHERE HE HAD CRATED IT UP AND STORED IT FOR SAFER KEEPING. BUT THEN HIS LIFE BEGINS TO FALL APART AND ENDS IN TOTAL OBSURITY.

IN THE EARLY 30'S (FROM 2 LETTERS I FOUND) HE TRIES TO INTEREST THE BRITISH EMBASSY IN SOME SORT OF AVIATION THEORY. THEN HE TRIES TO GET A JOB WITH THE CURTISS AEROCAR COMPANY IN FLORIDA. BUT NEITHER ARE INTERESTED. HIS WIFE RODELLA CARPENTER DIES IN 1937. IN 1942 HE WORKS IN OAKLAND CA AT A PAINT PLANT, EVIDENTLY LIVING WITH HIS MOTHER WHO LIVES IN NEARBY ALAMEDA CA.

BAXTER MAY HAVE RETURNED TO HENDERSON KY ABOUT 1947 AND LIVED WITH HIS MOTHER'S BROTHER, PERCY (PERRY) ELAM, WHO LIVED IN A SMALL RAMSHACKLED HOUSE SOMEWHERE OUT ON OR NEAR THE AIRLINE ROAD. ABOUT 22 FEB 1948, BAXTER IS ADMITTED TO THE WESTERN STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL IN HOPKINSVILLE KY (HE IS THERE FOR 3 YRS, 10 MONTHS AND 9 DAYS). HIS MOTHER DIES IN ALAMEDA CA, 2 NOV 1949. BAXTER DIES AT THE HOSPITAL 1 DEC 1951. ON 6 DEC 1951, BAXTER H ADAMS IS BURIED IN LOT 322 OF FERNWOOD CEMETERY IN HENDERSON WITH HIS RELATIVES, HIS BODY PROBABLY CLAIMED BY PERCY ELAM.

PERCY (PERRY) ELAM, ENDS UP WITH BAXTER'S PERSONAL EFFECTS. THEN PERCY DIES IN 1956, AND IS ALSO BURIED AT FERMWOOD CEM. FRANCES HALL BRELSFORD BALL (ALSO BURIED AT FERNWOOD), A RELATIVE WHO LIVED AT THE TOWN END OF THE AIRLINE ROAD, WAS THE EXECUTOR OF PERCY'S ESTATE. I WENT WITH FRANCES'S DAUGHTER LOUISE TO SEE IF THERE IS ANYTHING OF VALUE IN PERCY'S HOUSE, WHICH IS A MESS. I PICK UP SOME INTERESTING PHOTOS AND LETTERS OFF THE FLOOR, WHICH FRANCES LETS ME KEEP. THEY WERE THINGS THAT BELONGED TO BAXTER, WHICH I WOULD MUCH LATER FIND OUT INCLUDES A PHOTO OF HIS FATHER, ROBERT G ADAMS. I WOULD NOT LEARN WHO BAXTER ADAMS WAS UNTIL 2006 WHEN I GOT A COMPUTER AND INTERESTED IN ANCESTRY AND EBAY.

IN 1984 (AFTER MY FATHER DIED IN 1982) I COULD FIND NO ONE IN HENDERSON WHO WAS INTERESTED IN BAXTER'S STUFF. SO I DONATED THEM TO THE MEADE COUNTY LIBRARY IN BRANDENBURG KY (MY FATHER'S HOMETOWN), ALONG WITH A LOT OF MY PERSONAL FAMILY PHOTOS. IN 1990 THE KENTUCKY HISTORICAL SOCIETY COPIED BAXTER'S PHOTOS AND SOME OF MY FAMILY PHOTOS. THE LIBRARY FOR SOME UNKNOW REASON LATER GOT RID OF SUCH THINGS. ABOUT 2006 A LADY BOUGHT SEVERAL BOXES AT A GENERAL AUCTION IN CLOVERPORT KY AND BEGAN SELLING THE ITEMS ON EBAY, INCLUDING THE BAXTER ADAMS PHOTOS AND SOME OF MY PERSONAL FAMILY PHOTOS, WHICH I DISCOVERED ALMOST TOO LATE. BUT THE ONLY BAXTER ADAMS PHOTO I WAS ABLE TO TRACK DOWN AND BUY BACK, WAS THAT OF ROBERT G ADAMS, BAXTER'S FATHER.
