Simeon H. Anderson

Birth:	Mar. 2, 1802
Death:	Aug. 11, 1840
US Congressman. Born near Lancaster, Garrard County, Kentucky, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1823. He quickly became a rising star in state politics, especially after marrying the daughter of future Kentucky Governor William Owsley. Anderson served in the State House of Representatives from 1828 to 1829, in 1832, and from 1836 to 1838. During that time he purchased Owsley's 300-acre farm near Lancaster, "Pleasant Retreat", and it would remain in the family until after the Civil War. In 1838, Anderson was elected as a Whig to represent Kentucky's 5th District in the Twenty-Sixth US Congress, and took his seat on March 4, 1839. He would not complete his term. In late July 1840 he contracted a fever in the capitol and was brought home by Kentucky Senator Henry Clay. He died at 38; burial was in the Anderson Family Cemetery at "Pleasant Retreat". A cenotaph was erected in his memory at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. He was the father of US Congressman William Clayton Anderson, who also died young.
