He was elected as a Whig to represent Pennsylvania's 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1849 to 1851. During the Civil War he served as a Major, US Volunteers in the Paymaster's Department, being mustered in on November 26, 1862. He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, US Volunteers for his services, and was honorably mustered out on April 30, 1866.
