He as an outfielder making his debut with the New York Giants on April 20, 1936. For seven seasons, he played with the New York Giants (1936-39), Cincinnati Reds (1940-41), was a member of Reds' World Series Championship in 1940 and Philadelphia Athletics in 1943. He finished his career with a record of 510 hits, 241 runs scored, 28 homeruns, 251 runs batted in and a .282 lifetime batting average. In addition to his Major League playing time, he had a long 12-season minor league baseball career and for his high level of play, was elected to the International League Hall of Fame in 1956.
