US Senator. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Senator from New Jersey for three consecutive terms, from March 1877 until March 1895. Prior to entering politics, he raised livestock and owned a meatpacking business. From 1864 until 1870 he served on the Jersey City, New Jersey Board of Aldermen and in 1871 he was elected to the New Jersey State Senate, serving from 1872 until 1876. In 1877 he was elected to the US Senate, succeeding Republican Frederick T. Frelinghuysen. During his tenure, he served the chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs from 1879 to 1881, and again from 1893 to 1895. He was not a candidate for re-nomination in 1895 and was succeeded by Medal of Honor recipient William J. Sewell. After leaving office, he returned to his meatpacking business. He died at the age of 64.
