He was elected as a Republican to represent Pennsylvania's 17th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1859 to 1863. He owned the house and property on the northwest side of the town of Gettysburg that was heavily contested on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1, 1863). The ridge that that property is located is now called McPherson's Ridge.
