Charles E. Bechman, 88, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Johnson Mem­orial Hos­pital. He was a resident of the Ind­iana Masonic Home in Frank­lin.

He was born June 19, 1922, near Whiteland, to Henry J. and Henrietta (Diederich) Bechman. He was a graduate of Whiteland Community High School, Indiana Business College and the Insurance Institute of America.

He married Ondoise (Thorn­burg) Bechman on Aug. 1, 1942. She preceded him in death Sept. 3, 2001. He married Barbara Mitchell Service Ludwig on Aug. 22, 2004, atop the Empire State Building in New York. She lovingly survives.

Other survivors include sons, C. William Bechman of New York and James A. Bechman of Madison; four stepchildren, Dianna (Harold) Matlock, Gary Service and Judith Service, all of Franklin, and Kevin Service of Edinburgh; 18 stepgrandchildren; and 16 great-stepgrandchildren. He also is survived by two nieces, Pam Payne and Debe Reed, both of Whiteland; and a nephew, David Boone Coy of Indianapolis.

Charles served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He managed the Johnson County Realty & Insurance Agency for 17 years, worked for 22 years in the insurance department of Union Bank and Trust Company, managed the Franklin license branch for 20 years and was a bail bondsman. He also served 21 years on the Johnson Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees.

He was a Republican precinct committeeman for many years, served one term on the Franklin City Council and was treasurer of the Johnson County Republican Central Committee for 35 years.

He received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Gov. Otis Bowen in 1980 and Gov. Joseph Kernan in 2004.

Charles was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Franklin Masonic Lodge 107, a 10-time patron of Franklin Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star 439, Johnson County Shrine Club, Scottish, York Rite, Legion of Honor and Franklin American Legion Post 205.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St., (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and Franklin Masonic Lodge 107 will conduct a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Franklin American Legion Post 205 will conduct a military honors service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
