Paugstadt had still 2 handgrenades in his belt while taking POW.The Private presummed Paugstadt would use the grenades. His last words: "What did I do wrong?" He was taken to the Hospital, and died the same day.
Major Hugh Johnston wrote:Some shooting across the square drew my attention to two private soldiers herding more Germans towards the central mob. One German, whom I later learnt had tried to use a grenade, was writhing on the ground.The Jocks were very light on the trigger!
