Born the second son of John de Holand, Duke of Exeter and Elizabeth Plantagenet; he was also nephew to Henry IV, and a cousin of Henry V, and Richard II. In 1400 his father was arrested and beheaded on a charge of treason against his brother-in-law, Henry IV. given a chance to serve Henry V in the 1415 campaign in France, Holland distinguished himself at Agincourt and was created a Knight of the Garter. In 1416 his father's Earldom of Huntingdon was restored to him. In 1421 he was captured by the French at the Battle of Baugé and spent four years as a prisoner before his release in 1425. In 1435 he was appointed admiral of England, Ireland, and Aquitaine, and in 1439 he was made the king's lieutenant in Aquitaine. That same year, he was restored his father's Dukedom of Exeter.
