Henry was born about August 1, 1813 and died January 1, 1858. He was probably born in Davenport, New York. His father was most likely Peter Houghtaling and his mother Maria. Peter was the only Houghtaling living in Salina, New York in 1830, but was not there in 1820. There were several Peter Houghtalings in Davenport in the 1820 census. A number of people moved to northern New York in the early 1800s to work on the Erie Canal. The parents of Peter are unknown at this time.

Henry went back to Davenport in 1837 to marry Jane Couse. The family lived in Salina until 1853 when they moved to Woodside, Illinois, a small village just south of Springfield in Sangamon County. They stayed there for two or three years and then moved to Wasioja Township, Dodge County, Minnesota.

Henry and Jane had six children, probably all born in Saline, NY. Jane's obituary states that she and Henry had six children, three sons and three daughters. Jane died in 1911, and the obit states that "one son and three daughters have preceeded the mother to the better land." The eldest was Caroline, born about 1838. Next was Henry, Jr., who was born 14 August 1840. The third child was Andrew Jasper. The names and birth dates of two of the six children are unknown. There is a gap of six years between Andrew and Dorcas, born about 1849, and there may have been two children born in that time period or one between Andrew and Dorcas and one after Dorcas.

After Henry's death in 1858, Jane lived with her son Henry on the family farm in Wasioja Township. When Henry got married and moved to another township, Jane lived with her son Andrew until her death.
