Rev. Ross J. Allen, 81, Fort Morgan, Colo., died in Fort Morgan Community Hospital, Sunday morning, July 1st, after a month's illness.
He was born Sept. 26, 1897, in Markle, Indiana. He moved west with his parents and family in 1910, where his father took up a homestead in Pleasant Valley, north of Fort Benton. As a young man, he homesteaded in the Shonkin mountains, later selling it to enter the ministry. He graduated from Spokane University in 1925, and in the same year married Lucy Edmondson, at Creston, Wash.
His pastorates included Christian churches in Waitsburg, Washtucna and Creston, Wash. In 1927 he became State Secretary to the Christian Churches of Montana. He served a nine year ministry at Central Christian Church in Great Falls, Montana, during the years of 1934 - 1943. In March of 1943, he became a chaplain in the U. S. Air Force and was released in 1946 with the rank of captain.
After his release he accepted a call at the First Christian Church at Fort Morgan, Colo., and served until 1949.
He served on the board of extension from 1949 - 1953, and then became state secretary for the Christian churches in North Carolina, serving in this capacity until his retirement in 1965. After his retirement he served in interim ministries in seven different states, including an interim in Great Falls.
He is survived by two children, Mrs. Burta Pierce of Fort Morgan, Colo., and a son, Lyle Allen of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Esther McDonald of Darby, Mont.; and three brothers, Howard E. of Fort Benton, Mont., Durward E. and Jay W. of Fort Morgan, Colo.; and four grandchildren.
His wife, Lucy, preceded him in death in Nov. 1978.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday in the Fort Morgan Christian Church, Fort Morgan, Colorado. Interment will be in Fort Morgan cemetery.
