Birth: Mar. 25, 1918
Golden Pond
Trigg County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Mar. 18, 1978
Le Sueur County
Minnesota, USA

Maxie joined the US Navy on November 16 1937 and served on the USS West Virginia BB-48 with his 2 brothers Harry Brandon Bennett and Lacy Edward "Chum" Bennett who joined him in January 1940. They were aboard on December 7th 1941 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii when the Japanese attacked. All 3 survived.

Maxie went on to serve on the USS Minneapolis CA-36 with his brother Harry until the battle of Tassafaronga November 29th 1942 as the flagship for Task Force 67. A Japanese torpedo blew the bow of the ship off. According to my Great Uncle Jimmy Bennett, Maxie was upset because that's where he bunked and he lost all his uniforms and personal belongings. Because of the 5 Sullivan brother's from Iowa who were killed on the USS Juneau in November 1942 Maxie was transferred to the USS Heywood AP 12/APA 6 for the remainder of the war.

In late 1945 Maxie was station at Algiers (New Orleans) Louisiana Naval Repair Base. He met and married Delores Elaine Young from Cleveland, Minnesota on April 6 1946 at a chapel in the French Quarter.

Maxie left the Navy November 17 1946 after 9 years and 1 day of service. Maxie earned WW II Victory Medal; American Area Campaign Medal; American Defense Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 stars & Good Conduct Medal. His rank was Gunner's Mate 1st Class E-6.

Lacy went to serve on the USS Salt Lake City CA-25 and then the USS Lexington CV-14 aircraft carrier for the rest of the war.

All 3 brothers survived the war and are now gone but not forgotten.
