Served as Governor of Tennessee from 1887 to 1891. Elected as a Senator from Tennessee to the United States Senate, serving from 1907 until his death in office in 1912. Originally buried in Knoxville's Old Gray Cemetery, he was later re-interred in Johnson City, Tennessee.
