In 1943 she was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role as Bette Davis's mother in the film "Watch On The Rhine." Her other film credits include "Every Woman Knows" (1934), "Three Young Girls" (1937), "The Young In Heart" (1938), "Waterloo Bridge" (1940), "The Great Lie" (1941), "Tomorrow Is Forever" (1946), "Little Women" (1949) and "My Forbidden Past" (1951).
