Motion Picture Director. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was a child performer and attended the New York's Professional Children's School. He was one of the first acting teachers at the Actors Studio and established himself as a first-rate director while on Broadway. His first film directorial debut was for "Come Back Little Sheba" (1952), followed by "The Rose Tattoo" (1955). Some of best films included "I'll Cry Tomorrow" (1955), "The Last Angry Man" (1959), "Butterfield 8" (1960), "Our Man Flint" (1966) and "Willard" (1971). For television, his TV movies credits included "The Legend of Silent Night" (1968), "Another Part of the Forest" (1972), "How the West Was Won" (1977), "Playing for Time" (1980) and "The Day the Loving Stopped" (1981). He died of heart failure at age 79 in Los Angeles, California.
