He was a graduate of Lorain High School, enlisting in the United States Navy in 1951, stationed aboard the U.S.S. R.L. Wilson Destroyer, serving in the Korean War. Michael returned home and was employed for 33 years with U.S. Steel as a crane operator, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Lorain. Michael was past president serving for 20 years and member of the Lorain Riffle and Pistol Club. As an expert marksman, he enjoyed the sport and teaching others. He enjoyed bird watching, riding his motorcycle, and following the Cleveland Browns and Indians.
He is survived by nieces and nephews, Dennis and Kim Zayatz, Linda Woods and Diane Norman, all of Elyria; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Mary (nee Levay) Zayatz; and his brother, Paul Zayatz.
The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, 2150 Broadway, Lorain, (440) 244-1961, on Friday, August 29, 2008 from 6 to 9 P.M. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 10 A.M. in St. John Roman Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Dr., Lorain, Rev. Thomas R. Smith, Pastor, will officiate. Please meet at the Church on Saturday. A private graveside burial will take place at a later date at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
