Ed Cunninham is 66 -- 50 years on the Appeal (7-2-1918)
There was nothing like congratulations or any of that foolish stuff that goes with society affairs last night when the boys in the Appeal office just shook the hand of foreman Ed Cunningham. It was his sixty-sixth birthday, and his fiftieth year in the Appeal office. His semi-centennial comes November 17th at which time Ed Cunningham probably will have beaten the record of any other man on any other newspaper in the world.
In his fifty years on Appeal, Cunningham life has been knit and tangled into the web and wool of every life in Yuba and Sutter Counties. There is not a name that can be mentioned but what Cunningham knows the father and the mother and who the daughter married.
Half a century in practically a public capacity in one community is a record that seldom can be equalled.
Cunningham's parents were early settlers in Maysville. It was not until the family was well established that Cunningham's father went back to Cincinnati in 55 to order out his two boys. The came across the Isthumus, arriving here in 1856. Frank Cunningham went to work on the Appeal soon after, but Ed had to fish and loaf around for a while, so that he did not take an Appeal job until the fall of 1868, and if his work had not been satisfactory, he probably would have been fired sometime in the last 50 years.
Frank Cunningham, who had spent almost half a century in the Appeal office, died a year ago.
Marysville Evening Democrat - Tue 3/16/1920, p1 - Ed. Cunningham Passes Away Suddenly - The funeral of Edward Cunningham, wellknown printer of this city who died suddenly at his home on Fifth street about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon will be held from the chapel of Kelly Bros., at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and interment will be made in the Yuba City cemetery. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend. - Deceased was 67 years of age and a native of Ohio, coming to California in the early fifties with his parents when a mere boy. He settled in the Sacramento Valley and at an early age went to work on the Marysville Appeal to learn the printer's trade. With the exception of a year on an Oroville paper he was in the employ of the Appeal over a half a century. He belonged to a family of printers. His brother, the late Frank Cunningham, was foreman of the composing room of the Appeal up to the time of his death and his son, the late Edward Cunningham, was business manager of the Appeal for many years. - He leaves a wife, Ida Cunningham in this city, and one daughter, Mrs. Carrie Goodpastor of Sacramento, also one sister, Miss Nellie Cunningham of this city. - His sudden death came as a complete shock to his family and the community. Cunningham was down town yesterday noon and appeared to be in apparently good health. Soon after his return home yesterday afternoon he complained of feeling chilly. He sat down in a chair near the stove and was seen to suddenly drop to the floor and by the time a physician could be summoned he had passed away, a victim of apoplexy.
