An electrical engineer and physicist, he was head of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1919 to 1938, the dean of engineering from 1932 to 1939, and president of the Carnegie Institute from 1939 to 1955. Among his inventions are the differential analyzer, prototype of analog computer and was the co-developer of the Smith power-transmission tube. Also helped found many businesses including American Appliance Company (Raytheon) and headed the Office of Scientific Research and Development and National Defense Research Committee, which mobilized American science and technology during World War II, including the development of the atomic bomb. He authored the book "Modern Arms And Free Men" (1949).
