During World War II he was a heavy-bomber pilot who planned air raids on Japan and while serving with Curtis LeMay planned the atomic attack on Hiroshima. During the next 15 years of his career, he helped build the Strategic Air Command during what time he was awarded four stars all by the age of 48.
