Rev. H. W. "Hobie" Burnside, age 74, passed away January 11, 2010, at Britthaven Nursing Home of Smithfield, NC. Hobie was born in Fairmont WVA, where he began his ministry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart W. Burnside, Sr. and Eloise S. Burnside. Rev. Burnside received his license to preach in 1956, and served in the WVA United Methodist Conference for seven years. Hobie moved to Smithfield, NC, in 1964, where he served at Wesley Heights and Asbury United Methodist Churches. He served several churches in Eastern NC including the Outer Banks. Hobie continued his education at Pembroke State University, graduating in 1971, and then graduated from Duke University where he received his Masters of Divinity in 1976.
Rev. Burnside retired after 50 years of preaching. His last appointment brought him back to Johnston County, serving Fellowship and Micro United Methodist Churches. Hobie and Mary Jane retired and remained as members of Fellowship United Methodist church. Hobie was known for his preaching and bible studies. He loved to show his slides of the Holy Land. He went on two work missions to Jamaica. He enjoyed fishing in his younger years. He also enjoyed painting, reading and doing puzzles. He and Mary Jane enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children and grand children.
Funeral services will be held at Fellowship United Methodist Church, 5755 Raines Crossroads Road, Princeton, NC, Friday, January 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Rev. Burnside is survived by his wife, four children, nine grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, four step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
