After his father's death, the Skinner family, including Henry, continued to contribute toward their community, with the sons finding employment in business.
As a young man, Henry enlisted as a private at the beginning of the Civil War; he was promoted to Captain for his bravery at the battle of Resaca.
At the end of the war, Henry went to Chicago to join his brother, Hollis Skinner, at the firm Field, Leiter, & Company (which later became Marshall Fields).
Henry was taken ill there soon after. He returned home to Valparaiso, where he died at the age of twenty-two.
