William died from accidental drowning in the Erie and Wabash Canal.
Neighbor boys had offered to teach William and his younger brother, John, how to swim. But when they went home to ask permission, there were callers in the parlor. Since children didn't presume to interupt in those days, the boys went to swim without permission. William's accidental drowing at the age of 8 1/2 was a tragic result.
This was the turning point for Jonathan and Eliza. Fearful about bringing up their other children near the Canal and reservoir on their property, they left Indiana and moved to Minnesota that same year, 1855.
