US Congressman. Served in the United States Army during World War II in the Quartermaster's Corps. He was elected to representative five different Illinois Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1945 until his death in office in 1988, a span of 43 years. He represented the 22nd District from 1945 to 1949, the 25th District from 1949 to 1953, the 24th district from 1953 to 1973, the 23rd District from 1973 to 1983, and finally the 21st district from 1983 to 1988.
